TBI Resources for Military Leadership

Traumatic brain injuries can happen anytime, anywhere. If you are in a leadership role, understanding what to expect and what your responsibilities are will help ensure readiness for your service members.

As the DOD’s principal organization to lead, translate, and advance brain health, TBICoE develops resources supporting the service member patient, the MHS health care provider, fellow researchers—and now you, the military leader. This robust set of products is intended for any service member who supervises others, promoting the importance of actively encouraging troops to be medically evaluated after a potentially concussive event and accurately reporting the incident.

Warfighter Brain Health After TBI: Guidance for Leaders Fact Sheet

The fact sheet condenses the basics of recognizing, reporting, and preventing TBI in service members. It updates and supersedes the Line Leader Policy Guidance fact sheet and includes a list of what the DOD has defined as potentially concussive events and outlines leaders’ responsibilities to ensure service member readiness after a TBI.

Warfighter Brain Health for Leaders Training Video

The video expands and enhances the information in the fact sheet. In addition to leader-specific information, the video includes an introduction to TBI basics such as the mechanics of brain injury, the overlapping signs and symptoms of TBI and PTSD, and how each may affect functional and operational performance. Military leadership will benefit from the review of general diagnostic best practices and the explanations of TBI clinical support tools.
