Each year the PBI Network collaborates with Military Health System (MHS) stakeholders to develop implementation pilots of evidence-based and evidence-informed practices with the potential to improve readiness and patient outcomes. Each pilot is designed to identify the feasibility and acceptability of Department of Defense-wide implementation of an evidence-based clinical practice, and to develop solutions to any implementation challenges that could impede successful uptake and sustained use of the practice change.
PBI Network Implementation Approach
The PBI Network uses a systematic implementation approach based on implementation science (IS) to execute implementation pilots. This approach consists of six coordinated steps that are flexible and adaptable and can be tailored to meet the needs of each implementation pilot.
- Engage - Collaborate with stakeholders in order to better understand the feasibility of implementation, determine potential challenges that will need to be addressed, and identify the appropriate participant groups.
- Translate - Develop pilot components and plans that tailor implementation of the practice change to the selected clinical environment.
- Disseminate - Increase knowledge of practice change using tailored implementation strategies including in-person knowledge sharing, live or virtual trainings, and distribution of implementation support resources.
- Implement - Facilitate and monitor implementation in order to understand the feasibility of sustained adoption.
- Evaluate - Assess the feasibility and acceptability of the practice innovation implementation process and outcomes with stakeholders.
- Sustain - Develop a plan that will allow the clinic to support sustainment of the newly adopted practice at the conclusion of the pilot
