Clinical informatics sits at the intersection of health care and information technology. We use clinical information, health care data systems, data analytics, and modern technology to support clinical care and research efforts. These efforts are designed to improve the health outcomes of extremity trauma and amputee service members.
The Clinical Informatics and Technology Division builds upon existing Military Health System data warehouses. This happens through linkages with existing data systems including the:
- Department of Defense Trauma Registry
- Military Orthopedic Trauma Registry
- Naval Health Research Center
- Army Analytics Group
- VA Corporate Data Warehouse and
- VA Amputee System of Care Amputee Cube
When we're aligned to existing electronic health records (EHRs), we can identify individuals, demographics, and practices to study the variations among and the effectiveness of:
- acute and rehabilitation care practices
- prosthetic technology and services
- incidences of complications
- mitigation of secondary disabilities
- patient outcomes, and
- quality of life
When we're aligned with future EHR systems, such as MHS GENESIS, we'll have a system that integrates inpatient and outpatient solutions. It will also connect medical and dental information across the continuum of care from point of injury, through operational care and en route care to garrison care.
