The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) offers a robust Research Program to support the directorate's mission: harness the NICoE's research capabilities to sharpen understanding of the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and associated health conditions and to support the implementation of promising research findings into clinical practice. The NICoE Research Department contains four services:
- Imaging and Measurement Devices: Employs advanced imaging and measurement devices to support the development of diagnostic and rehabilitative tools to treat TBI
- Treatment and Rehabilitation: Coordinates with NICoE clinical services to evaluate both existing and emerging treatments and therapies for TBI
- Longitudinal Assessments: Supports the investigation of the long-term effects of TBI on patients and caregivers via longitudinal studies that track the progress of patients over several years
- Research Operations: Provides and oversees operational support of research activities, including the development of standard operating procedures and regulatory policy regarding human subjects research at the NICoE
The NICoE is involved in dozens of current studies and meaningfully engages with the scientific community via peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
Patients receiving care at the NICoE may opt to pursue involvement in a number of active studies; these involvements are voluntary and do not affect other aspects of the care received. Researchers at the NICoE conduct these studies in collaboration with other federal, academic, and private institutions to help further the treatment, research, and education of TBI and psychological health conditions.
