Our Mission
The National Intrepid Center of Excellence improves the lives of service members with traumatic brain injury and other invisible wounds of war through excellence in TBI clinical care, research, and education. As the headquarters of the 13-site Defense Intrepid Network for TBI and Brain Health (Defense Intrepid Network), the NICoE fosters collaboration among the many providers, researchers, and other staff working to heal the invisible wounds of war.
Our History
- In 2008, the National Defense Authorization Act directed the Department of Defense to establish a comprehensive plan for programs to prevent, diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate service members with TBI, PTSD, and other mental health conditions.
- Congress further instructed DOD to conduct research to better understand TBI interventions and new therapies, and mandated dissemination of these practices.
- DOD accepted an offer from the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund to build and outfit the NICoE, which would become the prototype for 10 other centers at MTFs across the U.S.
- The NICoE opened its doors on June 24, 2010, as a directorate of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
- Since 2010, the Intrepid Network has grown to 13 partner sites, with the interdisciplinary care model as the foundation of care.
