DOD Global, Laboratory-based, Respiratory Surveillance Program

The DOD Global, Laboratory-based, Respiratory Surveillance Program is housed within the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Department at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, in Ohio. Our mission is to provide an operationally relevant, global, laboratory-based respiratory surveillance program that encompasses the most important respiratory diseases affecting the U.S. military.

The purpose of this program is to:

  • Identify and characterize antigenically diverse strains of respiratory pathogens that affect DOD beneficiary populations and threaten global public health and
  • To collaborate with relevant organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the World Health Organization to ensure the availability of effective prevention and control measures, especially as it pertains to influenza and coronavirus vaccines

If you are a sentinel or participating site, we have compiled key resources to help prepare for the upcoming influenza surveillance season. The data from your site will be used to track influenza activity, monitor the trends in new and existing influenza virus strains, and help shape next season's influenza vaccination.
