The Eliminating Wrong Site Surgery and Procedure Events: A Guidebook for Inpatient and Ambulatory Facilities is designed to help military treatment facility leaders and staff eliminate wrong site surgery, or WSS, incidences. As the Military Health System continues on its journey to becoming a high reliability organization, MHS-wide improvement efforts to achieve this milestone are focused on eliminating WSS and reducing overall harm to patients through the application of high reliability principles and practices.
This Guidebook is based on a review of the literature and MHS processes and procedures and includes:
- A review of the current prevalence of WSS and its associated impact.
- Leading practices and strategies for preventing WSS, including specialty areas.
- Strategies for developing a local education model to build staff competency in preventing patient harm associated with WSS events.
