About Us
Located on Naval Air Station Pensacola, Naval Aerospace Medical Institute is the sole Navy source for Aeromedical training at all levels, including Aerospace Medicine residency. NAMI trains more than 240 aeromedical providers, including Aerospace Medicine Technicians and all categories of Aeromedical Officers. Several foreign military services, including Germany, France, Israel, Canada, Norway and the Netherlands, choose to send their physicians to our Aeromedical Officer training program. NAMI is truly an internationally recognized Center of Excellence.
With more than 16,800 personnel trained annually, Navy Medicine Operational Training Command has the largest training throughput in Navy Medicine! Headquartered at NAS Pensacola, Florida, NMOTC oversees six detachments and 12 training centers in more than 60 facilities spread across the U.S. More than 600 personnel support some 65 instructional programs within aviation, surface and undersea warfare, expeditionary forces, and special operations; supporting readiness for the Navy, other U.S. armed forces and U.S. allies globally.
NMOTC provides funding and manages quota control for specialized courses like Cold Weather Medicine, Humanitarian Assistance, and Chemical & Biological Casualties Management. NMOTC is home to the Robert E. Mitchell Center for Prisoner of War Studies established in 1972. The Center supports former POWs from every U.S. war and conflict since WWII, including the civilians held captive during the Iranian Hostage Crisis as well as POWs during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
NMOTC has come a long way from its origin in 1946 as the School of Aviation Medicine. As a supporter of Hyperbaric Medicine, NMOTC has the First and only US Navy Chamber accredited by UHMS. The Hospital Corpsman Trauma Training (HMTT) Program (four sites) and the Training Navy Trauma Center in Philadelphia (UPENN) underscore the command’s mission to maximize performance and survivability of the warfighter. NAMI hosts the DOD’s only Repatriated Prisoner of War Center. As we succeed in our vision, we host international students from over 24 countries.
Throughout its proud history, Navy Medicine Operational Command has established itself as a leader in the field of medicine. That reputation for excellence continues today as the staff propels NMOTC into the 21st century.
