Deputy Commander, Director of Medical Education and Research
U.S. Army Lt. Col. (Dr.) Wendra Galfand serves as Deputy Commander for the Directorate of Medical Education and Research and Designated Institutional Official of Womack Army Medical Center, where she oversees five departments: Graduate Medical Education; Department of Clinical Investigation; Hospital Education and Staff Development; Medical Simulation Center; and Medical Library. WAMC trains medical, dental, nursing, behavioral health, and allied health care professionals in 24 Graduate GME and 21 Health Education specialty programs at Fort Liberty, home of the Army Forces Command, the Army Special Operations Command, and the Army Reserve Command headquarters as well as home to the 18th Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne Division. Dr. Galfand is board-certified in family medicine and fellowship trained in obstetrics. She also serves as the medical director at WAMC for the Forensic Healthcare Sexual Assault Program and the Interservice Physician Assistant Program.
Lt. Col. Galfand graduated from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in Social and Behavioral Sciences. She received her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009, commissioning as a Medical Corps officer through the Health Professions Scholarship Program. She completed a military residency in family medicine at Martin Army Community Hospital, Fort Moore, Georgia, in 2012, and a fellowship in family medicine obstetrics at Carl R. Darnell Army Medical Center, Fort Cavazos, Texas, in 2013. Additionally, she completed professional military education including the Army Medical Department Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Army Command and General Staff College, the Brigade Healthcare Providers Course, Basic Healthcare Administration, and Combat Casualty Course.
Lt. Col. Galfand’s previous assignments include: command surgeon, Area Support Group Kuwait; program director, Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship, CRDAMC; core faculty, Family Medicine Residency, CRDAMC; chief, Family Medicine, Bayne Jones Army Hospital, Fort Johnson, Louisiana; officer in charge, Primary Care Medical Home, BJACH; medical director, Afghan National Detention Facility, Afghanistan; staff physician, Family Medicine and Obstetrics, BJACH; and faculty, Family Medicine Residency, CRDAMC. Lt. Col. Galfand has served temporary assignments as hospitalist and laborist, General Leonard Wood Army Hospital, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; hospitalist and laborist, BJACH; and general medical officer, Cadet Summer Training, Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Lt. Col. Galfand’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Operation Enduring Freedom Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, and the Norwegian Foot March Badge.
Lt. Col. Galfand is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and a member of the Uniformed Services Chapter, as well as a member of the American Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians.
