Chief of Graduate Medical Education
U.S. Army Col. (Dr.) John P. Schriver assumed the role as the Chief of Graduate Medical Education in 2013. He is also the Designated Institutional Official representing William Beaumont Army Medical Center to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The GME Department oversees WBAMC’s four ACGME accredited programs, three physician assistant programs, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program, and the Medical Library.
Dr. Schriver graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He then attended the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, earning his medical degree in 1989. He entered the U.S. Army through the Health Professions Scholarship Program in 1989, began his surgical residency at WBAMC, and graduated in 1994. Dr. Schriver’s military education includes the Army Medical Department Officer Advanced Course, Medical Management of Chemical and Biologic Casualties, Medical Defense of Biologic Warfare, and the AMEDD Combat Casualty Course. He graduated from Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1995.
Dr. Schriver was assigned as a staff general surgeon at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was the resident and education preceptor for the General Surgery Service, where he supervised the education of surgery residents, family practice residents, medical students, physician assistant students, and 18D medics rotating on the General Surgery Service. During this time, Dr. Schriver was attached to the Joint Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg. He deployed in August of 1994 with the Joint Task Force 180 in support of Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti. After his deployment, Dr. Schriver returned to WBAMC as a staff General Surgeon in 1997. He was selected as the associate residency program director of WBAMC’s Surgery Residency in 1999. In 2001 he became the Surgery Residency program director. During this service as program director, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on two separate occasions. After those deployments, Dr. Schriver was assigned to Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii, as a staff general surgeon in 2009. He was selected by the residents as the Teaching Staff of the Year during his first year at Tripler. He deployed again to Iraq in Support of Operation New Dawn. After returning from his deployment, he was again stationed at WBAMC as a staff general surgeon. Dr. Shriver retired from active duty in 2013.
Dr. Schriver’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Iraq Campaign Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon. Dr. Schriver is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and was recognized by the Army Medical Department as an expert in his field with the distinction of “A” designator.
Dr. Schriver is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
