Director of Medical Education, Mike O’Callaghan Military Medical Center
Col. (Dr.) Matthew Snyder is the Director of Medical Education, 99th Medical Group, Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nevada. There, he oversees the medical and dental residencies and allied health programs at the medical group to insure that military and national standards are exceeded in their respective educational programs. He also garners key community relations to maintain and expand training opportunities with regional and national community partners through training agreements.
Col. Snyder’s military medical career began in 2001, when he was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps. During his time in service, he was deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan, to provide care to service members and local nationals in the outpatient, inpatient and Intensive Care Unit settings. In 2009, Col. Snyder began service as a full-time faculty member, obstetrics director, flight commander, and assistant program director at Nellis Family Medicine Residency in Las Vegas, Nevada. From 2014 to 2017, Col. Snyder served as the military program director at the Saint Louis University Family Medicine Residency at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. Col. Snyder then returned to Nellis Family Medicine Residency, at Nellis AFB in 2017 to assume duties as program director. Col. Snyder has served as the DME and Designated Institutional Official at the Mike O’Callaghan Military Medical Center since 2019 and serves as an associate professor of family medicine with the Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, Maryland.
Col. Snyder graduated with a Bachelor of Science in pre-medicine from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina in 1997. In 2001, the same year he received his U.S. Air Force commission, he earned a Master of Science in anatomy from Pennsylvania State University, Hershey, Pennsylvania. He received his Doctor of Osteopathy in 2005 from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Lansing, Michigan. Three years later, Col. Snyder completed his family medicine residency at Eglin Family Medicine Residency, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, and became a board-certified family physician. He completed an obstetrics fellowship at Swedish Family Medicine Residency, Seattle, Washington, then advanced his faculty training by completing the Faculty Development Fellowship at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 2012.
Col. Snyder’s awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (one oak leaf cluster), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Medal (one oak leaf cluster), Air Force Outstanding Unit Medal (one silver oak leaf cluster), Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Device, and the Humanitarian Service Medal with Device. He earned the Air Force’s Special Experience Identifier as a senior educator.
Col. Snyder is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and serves on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Institutional Review Committee.
