About Us

The Mike O’Callaghan Military Medical Center, a Level III Trauma Center, is at the forefront of residency training in the Military Health System, boasting some of the newest and most innovative programs available. As the medical landscape continues to evolve, so too does our commitment to providing cutting-edge educational opportunities. Program offerings are constantly expanding, ensuring that our residents have access to a diverse range of specialties and training experiences.

This unique combination of military-sponsored Graduate Medical Education training programs and Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at University of Nevada-Las Vegas civilian-sponsored training programs sets us apart. By bridging the gap between military and civilian medicine, we are able to produce exceptional clinicians who are well-equipped to succeed in any setting within the Defense Health Agency. Our residents benefit from the best of both worlds, gaining the specialized skills and knowledge needed to excel in their chosen fields while also developing a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities present in military health care.

The result is a generation of leaders in the DHA, clinicians who are not only technically proficient but also possess the adaptability, resilience, and commitment to excellence needed to succeed in this dynamic and demanding field. As we continue to grow and evolve, one thing remains constant: our dedication to providing the highest quality education and training, and to inspiring our residents to reach their full potential as healers, educators, and heroes.

There are five physician residency/ fellowship programs within GME including:

  • Emergency Medicine Residency (UNLV-sponsored)
  • Family Medicine Residency (military-sponsored)
  • General Surgery Residency (UNLV-sponsored)
  • Gynecologic Surgery and Obstetrics Residency (UNLV-sponsored)
  • Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship (UNLV-sponsored)

Additionally, we have three Allied Health programs including:

  • Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency
  • Baylor/Army/Air Force Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Fellowship
  • Inter-service Physician Assistant Program (IPAP) Phase II

Mission

Provide world-class GME to produce board-certified, deployment-ready physicians capable of serving all patient populations, whether deployed or in garrison.

Aims

  • The institution aims to ensure and encourage physicians are provided and enabled to achieve a reasonable balance with duties/patient care at work and home life. This culture should be established and promoted even in residency as most residents perceive the expectation of working long hours while sacrificing personal lives.
  • The institution is dedicated to supporting our clinicians and residents in their ability to care for patients in a timely fashion through a variety of mechanisms including tele-health, personal portable devices and in-person care.
  • The institution strives to recognize healthcare disparities among the growing population of various ethnicities within our population and tailor the healthcare provided to meet the population’s specific medical needs.
