Applicants applying to Army Internship Programs such as Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC) Clinical Psychology Internship, must meet basic entrance qualification standards established by the Department of Defense and the Army to serve as Active Duty Commissioned Officers. Such standards are designed to ensure applicants can successfully perform their military duties. For example, applicants must meet medical qualification standards, age and citizenship requirements, physical fitness standards, and security qualification standards to be accepted for military Service. Under certain conditions, applicants who do not meet the qualification standards can be considered for a waiver. Each military Service makes independent decisions regarding waivers. It is possible to receive a waiver from one Service but not another. Each military Service conducts its selection board, and all waivers must be approved before the Service’s selection board.
Briefly describe in narrative form important information to assist potential applicants in assessing their likely fit with your program. This description must be consistent with the program’s policies on intern selection and practicum and academic preparation requirements:
This training program aims to produce highly qualified, autonomous, and professional psychologists capable of functioning within various applied settings in the Army and to develop the professional competencies and identity that will serve as a solid basis for a career in health service psychology. The philosophy of our Internship is based on the Practitioner-Scholar model. The focus is on adult assessment, treatment, and consultation training in an outpatient setting. Training is supplemented in specialty areas such as neuropsychology, primary care psychology, pediatric psychology, intensive outpatient psychology, and child and family psychology. Interns are encouraged throughout the year to develop and utilize their critical thinking skills, knowledge of the scientific literature, and ability to evaluate new research findings as a basis for clinical service delivery. Training focuses on applying ethical decision-making skills and respecting individual differences and cultural diversity throughout experiential and didactic activities. The program recognizes it is essential to begin at each student’s level of professional development and provide opportunities through which existing skills are refined and new skills are acquired. Please also see our MAMC Clinical Psychology Internship APPIC directory page for additional information.
Does the program require that applicants have received a minimum number of hours of the following at time of application? If yes, indicate how many:
- Total Direct Contact Intervention Hours: Yes; recommended 400 hours
- Total Direct Contact Assessment Hours: Yes; recommended 100 hours
Describe any other required minimum criteria used to screen applicants:
Applicants must be from APA-accredited doctoral programs (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology. Applicants must have at least 400 intervention hours and 150 assessment hours on the AAPI (exceptions possible due to COVID-19). They must submit a de-identified sample integrative psychological assessment report with their AAPI (preferably from practicum training). Each applicant’s AAPI is further reviewed to determine whether the applicant’s specific experiences are consistent with this program’s training model and aims. In-person and virtual interviews will be offered for the 2024-2025 training year. The virtual and in-person interview options are equivalent in the eyes of our selection committee.
All applicants should know the unique aspects of applying to a military internship. Applicants must meet the requirements to become a commissioned officer in the US Army to match this internship site. All applicants who match with this internship site become commissioned officers in the US Army and incur an Active-Duty Service Obligation (typically three years following completion of training). In addition to completing your AAPI, you must start the military accessions process as soon as possible by contacting your local US Army Health Care Recruiter via the Army Recruiting website, then select "Healthcare Students & Professionals" on the "Contact Us" page to search for a healthcare recruiter in your area. Be sure to speak with a recruiter before the interview notification. Please see our MAMC APPIC page for essential details about our military internship.
