Director, Department of Aviation Medicine
U.S. Army Lt. Col. (Dr.) John J. Venezia currently serves as director of the Department of Aviation Medicine at Fort Novosel, Alabama, as part of the United States Army Medical Center of Excellence, as well as the Deputy Consultant to the Surgeon General for Aerospace Medicine.
Lt. Col. Venezia earned his doctorate in osteopathic medicine from Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2006, a master’s in public health from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2010, a Master of Arts degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Louisiana Tech University in 1995, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Florida Atlantic University 1992. He is a dual board-certified aerospace and occupational medicine physician with substantial experience in graduate medical education and training.
Lt. Col. Venezia has served as Associate Program Director for Occupational Medicine, Program Director for Aerospace Medicine and currently serves as Director of Graduate Medicine Education and Designated Institution Official at the Department of Aviation Medicine at Fort Novosel in Alabama. He has deployed as brigade flight surgeon of Task Force Observe, Detect, Identify and Neutralize - Enhanced in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Lt. Col. Venezia’s awards include the Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, and the Air Force Commendation Medal. He has earned the Master Flight Surgeon badge and the basic Army Space badge. He was the recipient of the 2014 Aerospace Medicine Specialist of the Year by the Society of U.S. Army Flight Surgeons, 2017 Iron Major, 2019 Association of Military Surgeons of the United States Program Training and Education Award, is a fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association and in 2022 was awarded the Order of St. Michael by the Army Aviation Association of America.
Lt. Col. Venezia is a member of the Society of U.S. Army Flight Surgeons as well the Aerospace Medical Association.
