Program Description
Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune Sports Medicine Fellowship was established in 2023. Physicians are trained through a rigorous program that emphasizes quality patient care, research, pre-doctoral education. We currently support the development of two fellows annually but anticipates growing to capacity of four fellows. The partnership with sports medicine and the U.S. Marine Corps supports the operational readiness of Marines as well as the Marine Special Operations Group designated Raiders. The partnership of the Sports Medicine fellowship with the family medicine residency enhances the graduated medical educations strategically pertaining to musculoskeletal medicine and procedures.
Mission, Vision and Aims
Mission
To provide a supportive learning environment for specialized training in sports Medicine and exercise related injuries in order to train physicians to serve an essential role in “Keeping the War Fighter in the fight.”
Vision
Enhance the delivery of full scope medical care to active duty and dependents through exceptional graduate medical education training to support military readiness, military operations, and the care of military beneficiaries.
Aims
- Ensure our Fellows demonstrate professionalism while providing compassionate appropriate and effective care of each patient.
- Ensure our Fellows demonstrate competence in procedures and knowledge of all areas of sports medicine.
- Ensure our Fellows will demonstrate their ability to communicate and collaborate with patients’ families, military leadership, and other health professionals.
Curriculum and Schedules
Lectures are held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings via teleconference with the National Capital Consortium from 7 a.m. - 12 p.m. There are monthly themes to cover musculoskeletal and one general medicine topic. Regular Musculoskeletal Ultrasound training will also occur during this time.
Order of rotations may vary. Rotations will include Sports Medicine clinics at various locations, Orthopedics (Sports, Hand, Spine and General), Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy, Pain Management, Civilian Primary Care Sports Medicine, Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC). Throughout the year there will be sideline coverage for team sports, medical coverage of mass participation events, including the United States Marine Corps Marathon and Wounded Warrior games.

Fellows can elect to do time with Radiology, additional time with Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), Ultrasound and Ultrasound Procedure focus month, US Naval Academy (no-cost travel), or Sports Med with Naval Special Warfare (no-cost travel).
Fellows are not required to take inpatient calls at this time.
Fellows are immersed in the culture on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and learn a great deal about demands on servicemembers and the unique challenges of the warrior athlete. There is direct and regular interaction with United States Marine Corps (USMC) Human performance professionals including Athletic Trainers, strength and conditioning coaches and resiliency experts.
Required courses are the same as the rotation schedule shown above.
Military and professional leadership training is integrated into the didactic curriculum throughout the year. Fellows have the option to be involved in various committees and groups at the hospital throughout their year.
Scholarly and Professional Development Opportunities
All fellows will be required to participate in scholarly activity during their year. One option is to submit a case for presentation at a national or regional conference (American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, Uniformed Service Academy of Family Physicians, Camp Lejeune Research Symposium, etc...).
Our program fosters a culture of continuous development where our Fellows are required to engage in Quality and process improvement projects throughout their year with us. This helps augment the transition from trainee to develop leadership qualities that support the enhancement of clinical practice and much more. Fellows also work directly with a faculty mentor or with the Quality Council to implement clinic or institution wide projects that brings additional benefits to every department.
Topics for professional development will be included in the didactic curriculum. Faculty development training through USU is available intermittently throughout the year.
Participating Sites
Civilian Primary Care Sports Medicine occurs at Carolina Center for Surgery in Morehead City and Jacksonville, North Carolina.

All applications are placed in Medical Operational Data System (MODS) and are reviewed for any prospective fellows during September and October. Program graduates take the Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) which is offered biannually. To become fully certified, applicants are eligible to take the CAQ exam during the July testing window. Graduates are required to maintain their current board specialty certification as outlined by your specialty.
Teaching Opportunities
Fellows regularly teach and mentor residents, Physician Assistant students and medical students who are doing the rotations with sports medicine. Fellows serve as preceptors in the Family Medicine Clinic every other week providing additional opportunities to help train our future physician leaders.
Faculty and Mentorship
Fellows will work with a wide variety of Physicians and Allied Health Professionals including Neurosurgeons, numerous Orthopedic subspecialties, Pain Management specialists and specialists in human movement science.
Fellows have direct one on one regular interaction with the Program Director and Assistant Program director through the year which provides opportunity for personal, military, and professional mentorship.
Well-Being and Wellness Initiatives
The fellowship has a focus on health and wellness not only of our warrior athletes but of ourselves as well. There is an expectation that fellows will take advantage of the team of health professionals they are working with to optimize their own health as well. Fellows are supported in finding a healthy balance of work, study and social connection to optimize their overall wellness.
