The Family Medicine Obstetrics (FMOB) Fellowship Program at Naval Medical Center (NMC) Camp Lejeune is a 1-year experience encompassing both inpatient and outpatient practice in obstetrics and women’s health. The fellow will spend the majority of his/her time on labor and delivery at NMC Camp Lejeune but will also get experience in outpatient obstetric and gynecologic care and procedures within the main operating room.

Our Family Medicine OB Fellowship prepares physicians to deliver full-spectrum obstetric care, manage low and high-risk pregnancies, manage obstetric triage complaints, manage antepartum, labor and postpartum complications, as well as manage first trimester bleeding and miscarriage. Graduates will provide competent prenatal care to pregnancies complicated by diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, substance use, and mental health disorders. Additionally, be able to stabilize and treat pregnant patients hospitalized for pre-term labor, pre-eclampsia, diabetes, and placental disorders.  Fellows will attain competency in performing biophysical profile and limited obstetric ultrasound.  Fellows will maintain family medicine clinical skills. Our fellowship graduates will be prepared to expertly manage vaginal deliveries, including vaginal deliveries after cesarean section, perform vacuum-assisted vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, dilation and curettages, tubal sterilization and repair of complex perineal and vaginal lacerations. There will be additional opportunities for enhanced gynecologic office procedures. Fellows will practice under skilled clinicians including Gynecologic Surgeons & Obstetricians, Family Medicine OB fellowship trained physicians, and a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist

NMC Camp Lejeune delivers historically 1,500-1,800 patients/year. After a brief introductory period, the fellows are the primary surgeons on all patients requiring Cesarean Sections (C-sections), which our hospital performs on average of 250-300/year. Fellows graduate with 120-140+ C-section procedures.

Each week, Fellows will spend a half-day providing full spectrum care to their own panel of patients in one of our Family Medicine offices to help maintain their skills, as well as a half-day contributing to residency program didactics.

Eligible candidates for fellowship will have completed a 3-year Family Medicine residency and have exhibited an additional interest in obstetrics during their family medicine residency or as Family Medicine staff. Fellows will be selected thru the Joint Graduate Medical Education Selection Board. The ideal fellowship candidate for our program will have the following characteristics.
