About Us
SAUSHEC is one of two major Department of Defense multi-service graduate health education platforms; the other is National Capital Consortium at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. SAUSHEC is the second largest DOD physician graduate medical education platform, largest for the Air Force, and it is the largest DOD site for Graduate Allied Health Education.
Our primary training site, Brooke Army Medical Center is the busiest hospital in the DOD and hosts its sole Level 1 trauma center and burn center. BAMC also has the busiest medical simulation center.
San Antonio has greater than 300 years of history and a deep connection with the military so much so, that San Antonio has earned the title of Military City, USA. Joint Base San Antonio oversees the four military bases in the area including: Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base, and Camp Bullis. Not only is San Antonio a military-friendly place to live, but it also boasts very affordable housing.
SAUSHEC hosts the training of over 700 U.S. military officers in 34 Graduate Medical Education and 22 Graduate Allied Health Education specialty programs. Its graduates are prepared to lead in serving the medical needs of the U.S. military across the globe. SAUSHEC falls under the command structure of the Defense Health Agency’s San Antonio Market, with Brooke Army Medical Center and the 59th Medical Wing’s Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center functioning as the two primary training sites. There are over 250,00 military beneficiaries across the region.
