Capt. (Dr.) Mark P. Tschanz

Capt. (Dr.) Mark P. Tschanz serves as the Director of Professional Education and Designated Institutional Official, overseeing the training of over 250 military officers in 16 Graduate Medical and Dental Education residency and fellowship programs and 14 Graduate Allied Health education specialty programs. Capt. Tschanz also manages the Clinical Investigation Department including two regional Institutional Review Boards. In addition, he directs the Staff Education and Training Department, Healthcare Simulation and Bioskills Center, Nursing Research Department, and Medical Library. Capt. Tschanz is a practicing general Internal Medicine physician and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.

Capt. Tschanz earned a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering with a minor in chemistry from the University of Illinois and a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Missouri. He completed residency in internal medicine at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and served as the Chief of Residents at the same program. He earned a master’s degree in academic medicine from the University of Southern California in 2015.

Capt. Tschanz has served in several roles in nearly 20 years of active duty. Prior to his current assignment, he completed tours as a general internist, associate program director, clerkship site director, and program director of the Internal Medicine Residency program at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. He served as the senior medical officer on the USS ESSEX and deployed in 2010 to Camp Bastion Hospital in Helmand Province as the sole U.S. Intensivist for the multinational Role II hospital. In addition, he deployed as chief of staff to Camp Atterbury, Indiana in response to Operation Allies Welcome.

Capt. Tschanz’ awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with a gold star, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and he is designated as a Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer. He received the Master Clinician award at the Naval Medical Center San Diego as well as various teaching awards.

Capt. Tschanz has served on multiple national committees and councils. At the American College of Physicians, he served on the Council of Early Career Physicians, the Medical Practice and Quality Committee, the Credentials Committee, and the Population Health and Medical Science Committee. He served as the Governor of the Navy Chapter of the ACP until 2023. He co-authored the Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guidelines for the management of hypertension and diabetes in primary care. In addition to diabetes and hypertension, he has published evidence-based practice in the management of COVID infections. Capt. Tschanz is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
