Medical Student Rotation Information

The Family Medicine clerkship is designed to give medical students a broad exposure to Family Medicine. Each student is assigned a primary staff and upper-level resident preceptor.  They both serve a large role in ensuring that your clinical experiences provide maximal experience and learning.  Students spend the majority of their clinic time with these preceptors, but other faculty and residents will often precept as well. In addition to Family Medicine outpatient clinic, students spend time in procedure clinics, and working with the Family Medicine inpatient service.

During a Sub-I rotation, the medical student is given two weeks of inpatient or a week if inpatient and a week of OB. During the inpatient rotation the student is responsible for patient care similar to that of an intern that is on the inpatient service for both our floor and ICU patients. Examples would include, admitting a patient and writing the history and physical, presenting on rounds, discussing recommended orders for the patients, writing daily notes for the patients they see, and when appropriate writing any discharge summaries.  While on Labor and delivery students can expect to see a variety of Labor and delivery triage complaints as well as hands on labor management and delivery experience, both vaginal and cesarean deliveries.

Requesting a Rotation or Interview

Our program offers rotations to fourth year medical students interested in applying to family medicine. Rotations are typically four weeks long and can be requested in a variety of clinical environments. Students interested in arranging a rotation should start by reviewing the “Medical Student Information” tab.  Rotation requests may be submitted within 6-12 months of the intended rotation month by emailing our GME department at usn.jacksonville.nmrtc-jax.list.gme@health.mil

Third-year medical students may be able to be accommodated on a space-available basis.
