Staff Sergeant Eric D. Cottrell was killed on August 13, 2007, when an improvised ex­plosive device struck his vehicle in Qayyarah, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Free­dom. The 39-year-old served with the 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Bliss, Texas. Cottrell was buried with full military honors at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Alabama.
