Col. (Dr.) George Martin died along with his crew as their unarmed B-52 crashed off the northwest coast of Guam on July 21, 2008 while conducting a flyover as part of Guam’s Liberation Day celebration. As the deputy commander with the 36th Medical Group, he was stationed at Andersen AFB in Guam. Martin, an aspiring astronaut, also previously served as a medical officer and flight surgeon at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
