Corporal Stephen M. McGowan was killed on March 4, 2005, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his patrol in Ramadi, Iraq. The 26-year-old was as­signed to the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infan­try Division, out of Camp Hovey, Korea to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. He had volunteered to go to Iraq so that a fellow medic with children would not have to go. McGowan was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
