Hospital Corpsman Third Class Christopher W. Thompson was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq when an improvised explosive device killed him on October 21, 2005. The 25-year-old North Carolina native, who was assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, was conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Family and friends honored their beloved son and brother at the Peace Haven Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina; he is buried at Mountlawn Memorial Park.
