Hospital Corpsman Third Class Fernando A. Mendez-Aceves was shot and killed April 6, 2004, while tending to another Marine who had been shot during combat in Fallujah, Iraq. The 27-year-old Hospital Corpsman was assigned to the Naval Medical Center San Diego, 1st Marine Division Detachment, in San Diego, California. His body was cremated, and his ashes, together with those of his great-grandfather, rest in Chula Vista, California.
