Specialist Charles E. Odums II, an Army Medical Specialist, died in action on May 30, 2004, when his convoy hit an explosive device in Baghdad, Irag. Odums was attached to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. His unit was deployed to Iraq in March 2004, to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. On June 9, 2004, funeral services were conducted at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Sandusky, Ohio, after which hundreds of family members, friends, military veterans, townspeople, and service members watched as his casket was carried by a military detail to an open marble pavilion in Oakland Cemetery. Many held flags and some saluted or stood with hand over heart as the Soldier’s funeral procession passed.
